Woodland No. 4--Hodge Podge

This little mini is a Hodge Podge of all the bits and pieces that had collected on and around my cutting board.  This week I picked a room of the house each day to go through cleaning, pitching and reusing.  My cutting board area was a mess.  So, what better way to reuse than to just start sewing.  This little mini reminds me of what is happening on the outside of our woodland home, too.

We have been in a major landscaping mode for the past year.  Yes, year.  We had to take down some large trees that were becoming a threat to the house.  In doing so, we also took the opportunity to terrace, add dirt and large rocks to create a more level yard, both front and back.  So we are sowing--grasses, wildflowers, bushes, transplanting and mulching.  Our goal is to complete it in the next month.  But, if you watch the weather--rain in Missouri has been heavy this year so our outdoor project is progressing slowly.

But, my little quilt went together quite well.  I added wood beads, embroidery stitches and a wire hanger for fun.  The little quilt is 6" wide by 9 1/2" long from tip top of hanger to the bottom of the beads. Looking for a New Home

Reality
Cabin in the Woods
Mini Quilts are taking over my sewing corner and in need of a new home.
Check out my Patchworks Shop on the sidebar to see what's available. I only put a few out at a time, so check back frequently to see what's new.
Besides, do some planting and mulching this weekend.  I have a quilt to mark for church and another Weekly Art Quilt Project mini started.  It's fun getting my quilting mojo back and I will say joining the quilt project over at Serendipity Patchwork & Quilting has been great for me.  It has helped me to get my sewing machine and hands moving again.  Happy Friday & Happy Quilting!

Woodland No. 3--Cabin in the Woods

After starting my Woodland Series, I took a look at a mini art quilt I did years ago.  It was perfect to add to the series, but needed a little punch.  The beads and branch hanger just seemed to be the punch it needed.  So, Woodland No.3--Cabin in the Woods has a new look.

Look closely a 1 1/2" log cabin block is hiding among the trees in this little forest.    Raw edge applique, hand stitching make this 6"x 8" mini art quilt.  With hanger and beads the quilt is now 11" long.  Linking up to  Weekly Art Project check it out.  Happy Quilting!

Monday--Moment of Thought

This week is a busy one for me.  Some good, some not so good, some hopeful, but all part of life.  It amazes me how everything can be just rocking along and then "boom" everything hits at once.  Within an hour we got the news that our Heating & Cooling system was dead and we need a complete replacement (the price is huge).  And the doctor's office called and I need more testing for a spot they saw on my routine mammogram.  What a yucky day!!

To say the least, this week is going to be an emotional roller coaster.  I have plans with friends and family on Monday and Wednesday, for laughs and fun.  Waiting for test results will be stressful, but I am hopeful that all will be okay.  My moment of thought today is enjoy every moment.  Life can change so quickly.
 Happy Quilting!!

Sunday---Precious Promises

So let us not become tired of doing good; for if we do not give up, the time will come when we will reap the harvest.  So then as often as we have the chance, we should do good to everyone, and especially to those who belong to our family in the faith.

Just Needs A Little TLC

This little quilt from Pottery Barn Kids gets some TLC from me.

My son found this quilt in a box he purchased at a tag sale.  He wasn't buying the quilt, it was just there.  Since, I like quilts he passed it to me.  The quilt was in disrepair with some fading, a couple of  tears, even a hole.  But, all fixable if a person wanted to work on it.  This little boys quilt was much loved, like the Velveteen Rabbit.

I washed it and was really thinking it might be good to donate.  And then, my 3 year old grandson, Parker, who is a construction vehicle enthusiast, saw the quilt and became so excited.  I asked  him if he wanted the quilt--the answer was yes with the biggest smile.  What Grandmother can resist that?   So out came my thread, even a little embroidery to spruce things up.  Parker has a new "big boy" bed and I think this much used quilt will look perfect.  The quilt still has some snuggles in it and I know Parker will really love and snuggle with his new/old quilt. Linked to Off the Wall Friday and Whoop Whoop Fridays wonderful projects on both sites.  Enjoy and have a great weekend. Happy Quilting!

Woodland No. 2--Reality

Woodland No. 2 -- Reality is complete.  It measures 6 1/4 x 11 inches (from the top of the branch to the tip of the bead fringe).  The story behind this little piece is sad, but the mini quilt was fun to make.  I have more pieces of the "Old" Star Quilt you will see it used again.  Great way to reuse and update.
All is quiet in and around the Cherry tree.  To read about the background of this little art quilt and the Cherry tree click here.   The drama in the woods has calmed as the sun shines brightly.  Time to go out and give the Deer some corn.  You can also find this little art quilt and others linked to the Weekly Art Project.   Have a great Wednesday and Happy Quilting!

Monday---Moment of Thought

Here's hoping you had an enjoyable Mother's Day.  Mine was relaxing, filled with sweet memories of my son, my grandson and my Mom.  My Mom lost her battle with Altzheimer's in 1995.  She didn't talk much and couldn't remember who I was.  But, I sure remembered her--and still do, especially on days like yesterday.

She was strong, smart, worked hard for what she had and accomplished much in her life.  She came from a very poor beginning in Arkansas.  She quit school at an early age because she had to work in the cotton fields.  But you would never guess.  She read all the time and created herself.  She created a business woman, an award winning seamstress, wonderful cook, homemaker and of course a great Mom.

During WWII she worked in a defense plant--while my Dad was in Europe.  She taught herself how to drive.  Saved money while he was gone so they could buy a home when he returned from service.  I grew up in that home.  She always said "Those pennies turn into dollars".   She was a cosmetic buyer for a major department store in St Louis--while I was in grade school.  She helped my Dad create a successful business, during my middle school thru college years.  When my Dad died suddenly she held the business together until she could sell it for the price she wanted.  She was a wonderful Grandma--baby sat her grandson while I was teaching school and gave him special memories.

Two weeks before my Dad died, he had said to me that something seemed wrong with Mom, but I couldn't see it.  I lived away from St. Louis at the time and was not around everyday.  But, by 1983 I began to see what my Dad had noticed years before.  Everything they say about Altzheimer's is true.  It is a terrible disease for both the victim and the caregiver, it robs so much.   With all the ups and downs of Altzheimer's  I have one most precious memory.  Christmas 1993, my husband, son and myself went to the care center where she lived.  She was eating lunch, the disease had taken her ability to feed herself and a nurse was helping her.  I walked in room, she had her back to me and did not know I was there.  She looked up at the nurse and said "I sure love my daughter".  The nurse and I just stared at each other.  It was like time had stopped--my Mom had not spoken for months maybe even a year.  It was the best Christmas present I have ever received.  I have been so blessed to have had a woman like her for a Mom.

She is why I quilt.  She made beautiful applique quilts.  She has always been an inspiration.  I am not the needlework person she was, but she instilled in me the joy of working with fabrics, threads and my imagination.  Thank You Mom!     Wishing you all sweet memories and Happy Quilting!

Sunday---Precious Promises

Create a pure heart in me, O God,
and put a new and loyal spirit in me.
Do not banish me from your presence;
do not take your holy spirit away from me.
Give me again the joy that comes from your salvation,
and make me willing to obey you.

Woodland Life Reality

Life in our woodland is unfolding as I stitch this little art quilt.  As the sun sets and the stars and constellations emerge the drama is continuing.  Mama and Papa Robin are trying to protect their nest from a dark predator.  During the mid-morning hours, a Missouri Black Snake realized that there was a nest of Robin's eggs in the Cherry tree that is close to our office window.  He got as close to the tree as possible, then hid under a rock.  The Robins have done there best, all day, to keep him away from the nest.  Even though Black Snakes do go after tiny birds and bird eggs, they are very good to have around to control the field mice, voles and other small critters, even unwanted snakes that can cause havoc for those of us who live in the woods.  The Robins were successful, the last I looked.

But, now as morning dawns, I'm not so sure.  The nest seems quiet, Mama & Papa are not flying to and fro.  The cycle of life for the woodland critters can be hurtful, they say it's natures way.  Woodland No. 2  represents that woodland drama. Drama we observe and that which goes unseen.

Fabrics represent the scene that was played out yesterday and today.  Birds, snakes, stars, constellations and small critters.  All of my art quilts are made from vintage bits and pieces.  This one is a portion of a hand quilted star quilt.  I will be adding machine quilting, hand stitches, beads and hanger/branch. Linked to Off the Wall Friday and Whoop Whoop Friday.  Wednesday is reveal day.
Stop back by and enjoy your weekend.  Happy Quilting!

Woodland No. 1

Weekly Art Quilt, Woodland No. 1, is complete---well as much as I can do now.  Since the rains have gone away and the sun has been out---planting has begun.  With that comes stiff hands, so hand stitching became a little difficult.  May try to improve my machine quilting skills with this little weekly project.  Anyway, french knots, back stitch and some quilting stitches helped to add punch to the tiny bits and pieces used to create trees, flowers, rocks and sun.  The little quilt is 5 1/2" square.  It was fun to have a project with a deadline.  Check out the others at Serendipity Patchwork & Quilting.  Already have ideas for the next mini.  Have a great day and  Happy Quilting!

Weekly Art Quilt Project

Over the weekend I found an interesting blog Serendipity Patchwork and Quilting, hosted by Brenda Gael Smith.  At the beginning of the year she started a Weekly Quilt Art Project that participants can link up to on Wednesdays.  It really sparked my interest.  I enjoy making small art quilts---what a way to get my quilting mojo back.  So, I'm starting this week (Week 33--I think).  I also decided to try a series.  I never quilted in a series, but I've read that it helps to organize ones thoughts.  I need that.

Since I have a love of nature and the woods, my series will be themed around woodland life.  My quilts will be small and many will have hand stitches.  This weeks quilt is featuring trees, boulders, flowers and the sun.  This weekend we planted our front yard slope.  It is loaded with huge boulders, from the ledge to the dry creek bed.  Hubby was tired of mowing, so with the help of our son we converted the hill side into a terraced area.   We filled many spots with perennials, and will be adding mulch and smaller landscaping rock.  We want a maintenance free area, just to enjoy.

This weeks art quilt will be hand stitched, no binding--just the raw edge and measures 5 1/2 inches square.  Notice the basting.  I've never tried this before, but I'm a little rushed for time and I thought I would just bast my little pieces to hold them in place before the hand stitching begins.  I'm sure the quilt police would have something to say about this technique.  Check back Wednesday to see if I meet my goal of completion.    I better get stitching.   Happy Quilting!!

Sunday---Precious Promises

I am not my own self-made, self-reliant being but yours, Oh God.
Make me into what You will.
Make me a neighbor with those You will.
Guide me on the easy path for You.
Guide me on the rocky road for You.
Whether I am to step up for Your or step aside for You;
Whether I become full or empty, with all things or with nothing;
I give all that I have and all that I am to Your. So be it.
May I always remember you, O God, I belong to you. Amen

Ready for the Race

They say the third time is the charm, and that holds true with my Kentucky Derby Hat.   I tried adding pink sheer fabric under the black netting, tried big flowers.  Nothing seemed to look good---remember I look awful in hats.  Then the idea came to me---ribbon and a horse.  I had some novelty print horse fabric and of course lots of ribbon.  I just used silk straight pins to attach the ribbons and horse.  The horse is stabilized with backing board.  So the hat is finished.  Hubby's bow tie looks great.  Hope he can tie it!!!!  He's not a bow tie wearer.  Anyway, we are ready for the race to begin.

It's hard to believe, but it is still raining in Missouri.  The weather man says it will end in our area around 4:00 pm  today.  Then the sun will come out for a few days.  Things need to dry out and the rivers need to go down.  Areas are still having trouble and traffic is awful with so many road closures.  Enjoy the upcoming weekend and the wonderful quilts at Off the Wall Friday, as always Happy Quilting!

Thinking Kentucky Derby

I've been collecting.  Trying to find bits and pieces that could come together for a one of a kind Kentucky Derby Hat for me and Bow Tie for hubby.

We have been invited to a Kentucky Derby themed charity night on Saturday.  Of course, prizes will be given for best hat and tie.  I don't expect to be in the winner's circle, especially since I look awful in a hat.  But the fun will be creating something for the festivities.

I've down loaded a bow tie pattern and looked a hundreds of hats on Pinterest.  Here's what I have come up with.  Hubby's bow tie is in the making and I'm going for a smaller Fascinator Hat with a pink and black theme.  More work to be done on both.  Updates as we get closer to the Starting Gate.

It is raining again in Missouri, good day for some stitches.  Happy Quilting!

Monday---Moment of Thought

I was just looking over the design page for my Blog and I realized that it has been weeks--like about eight, since I have posted anything about anything.  That makes me sad.  I enjoy writing and posting about quilting, life in a Missouri woodland, the adventures of our critters and family.  But, life has been stepped up a notch for us.  We are helping our son start his own business, and it is very time consuming.  I'm the bookkeeping, secretary and all around Girl Friday.  Hubby has also taken on some tasks to help.  We retired 10 years ago, but it doesn't feel like it.  We said we would help for a couple of years and that was it---we are at 8 months and counting.  Our son is a great tradesman, but does not have experience with business management.  Since, hubby and I have owned a business we thought helping to get him on his feet management wise was the thing to do.  I will say, we are enjoying the challenge on most days, but there have to be trade offs.

Because of this new schedule my quilting is at a stand still.  In fact, those of you who have read my blog before know I quilt at my church and do the majority of the binding of the finished quilts.  I have two church quilts that need binding.  I'm pushing to get them started.  I want to turn over a new leaf and find time to get to my little sewing area.  It is a pleasant little spot in a hobby room my hubby and I share.  I think I need to take a tip from Victoria Findlay Wolfe, and treat myself to 15 Minutes of Play each day.

I want to spend some time with this little Blog too.  May 1st seems like the time to get myself together and that needle and thread moving.  Wish me luck--you'll know if I'm successful, I'll be giving updates right here.  Have a great week and as always--Happy Quilting!
