Celebration---100th AAQI Quilt

Polar Bear Wishes is my 100th AAQI quilt donation.  I would have never believed when I made my first quilt which was #651, that AAQI is now registering quilts with numbers over 11,700 or that I would have made a hundred quilts and earned over $2,700.00.  I've worked on these quilts over the years  in memory of my mother, Helen Hoevel. She lost her battle with Alzheimer's in 1995. During her lifetime she enjoyed sewing and making beautiful applique quilts. She passed on to me the love of sewing and quilt making and I can’t think of a better way to work toward the cure than using the craft my mother so enjoyed.

When I was getting close to this 100th quilt---I was trying to decide which of my little quilts would be appropriate for this honor.  I choose Polar Bear Wishes because I know that the Polar Bear is wishing for a cure.  The quilt measures 6 1/4" x 9 1/2" and is hand quilted.  Wishing everyone a great weekend and Happy Quilting!

Laburnum Fairy

My favorite novelty print, Flowers and Fairies.  I made a few of these little AAQI quilts.  This one has a raw edge border and is hand quilted.  I used metallic thread in her wings.  Just a fun little quilt that measures 7 5/8 x 10 1/4 inches.  Laburnum Fairy is #29.  Happy Quilting!

Mucho Money

Quilt #28 is entitled Mucho Money.  It's a novelty print of lottery tickets (cute).  I cut the fabric at an off angle and hand quilted the tickets and coin.  The little quilt measures 7 x 9 1/4 inches.  Lets hope AAQI is blessed with Mucho Money at the Houston Quilt Show, where many of these little quilts will be sold this year.  I'm only two quilts away from my goal of 30 quilts this year.  They will be completed this week---stay tuned for the postings.  Enjoy your Monday and Happy Quilting!

News from the AAQI Blog:
The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative hopes to bring 2,000 quilts to sell in its booth at IQF Houston. (Exhibit area, number and row as yet unknown.) They've already started moving quilts from the Quilts For Sale page (http://www.alzquilts.org/quiltsforsale.html)  over to the Hoarding For Houston page (http://www.alzquilts.org/houston2012.html) They will continue to move quilts, starting with the lower numbers first. So if you're not going to Houston , it's time to shop now!

Back to School Blog Hop Party

I'm joining in on the fun---hope you'll join in too!.  The Back to School Quilter's Blog Hop Party will be underway until September 3.  For this blog hop I'm giving away a great book by Diana McClun and Laura Nownes Say It With Quilts.  I discovered this book a few months ago and greatly enjoyed the stories, quilt patterns and ideas. To quote Laura Nownes "this book is all about...our feeling toward a special person, event, pattern or fabric that inspires the making of our quilts."

To enter for this give-away leave a comment about what inspires you to quilt.   The winner will be announced on Monday, September 3 at 6:00pm central time.  All comments will be individually placed in a bowl and the winner will be drawn.  A link to the other Blog Hop Party participants can be found at http://quiltinggallery.com/quilters-fun/quilters-blog-hop-party/

Enjoy the Hop and Happy Quilting!

# 27 Modern Mini

I love the look of the new modern quilts that are popping up all over in magazines, quilt shows and on the internet.  I thought an AAQI Modern Mini would be in order.  It was fun and very easy to make.  Strip piecing and machine quilted.  The mini measures 7 1/4" square.  Have a wonderful weekend and Happy Quilting!

Cosmic

This fabric reminded me of something out of this world.  Hence, the name Cosmic.  Made up of vintage drapery fabric and crazy free motion quilting.  AAQI quilt #26 was born.  The quilt is 8" square and seems to be moving toward a vastness that is our universe or maybe my goal to complete a total of 100 quilts for AAQI.  Four more to go-----Cosmic.   Have a great day and Happy Quilting!

Cornflower Basket

#25 is an odd little AAQI quilt.  The smallest I've every made, 6 1/2" square.  It all started with a little paper pieced block I found at a tag sale in the bottom of a box of fabric.  Had no clue the name of the pattern, but to me it look like a basket of flowers and since they were blue---just reminded me of Cornflowers.  So, the name Cornflower Basket came to mind.  I then just cut pieces of fabric to make a border of prints and solids. Not much of a quilt from a creative side, but maybe this little AAQI quilt will find a nice place in someone's home.  Have a Happy Monday and Happy Quilting!

Sunday---Precious Promises

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.  For every one that asks, receives; and he that seeks, finds; and to him that knocks, it shall be opened. ...How much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?  Matthew 7: 7-8, 11

Friday Flowers

Yesterday was a muggy gray day.  The weather people had been predicting rain and thunder storms for hours.  And then around 3:00pm it arrived.  Lightening, great claps of thunder and finally large fast drops of rain poured from the sky.  Not every spot in the area received the showers.  Our place was one of the blessed locations and the grass, trees, flowers truly enjoy this break from a beastly summer.
We need a few days of rain, but we'll take what ever we get.

Have a great weekend and Happy Quilting!

Butterfly Log Cabin

Butterfly Log Cabin is number twenty-four in my 2012 goal of thirty AAQI quilts.  This little mini quilt is 7 1/2 x 7 3/4 inches and is a machine pieced liberated log cabin.  I started with my center feature fabric, the butterfly and then just added pieces of fabric from my bits and pieces bin that featured colors in the butterfly. I didn't know exactly where I was going, I just sewed until I reached a size that was pleasing to me.  Some of this little quilt is hand quilted, some machine quilted.  I added a metallic silver thread to the butterfly wings for a little sparkle. The binding is raw edge.  Give liberated log cabin piecing a try.  It's fun and you will always be surprised with what an interesting quilt will be created.  Happy Quilting!

From Ultimate Guy to Country Garden

I'm a woman of many hats---aren't we all.  The past three weeks has been devoted to my hubby's hobby---Sports Memorabilia.  Hubby and I traveled to Baltimore, Maryland for the National Sports Collector's Convention.
Returned home last Monday the 6th, and started getting ready for the Ultimate Guy Show in St Louis.  We are now back home and hubby's hobby/doing shows is over for a few months.  I always enjoy working together with him, but as the years go by the grueling show hours, set up and tear down gets a little harder.   Now, I can rest and quilt a little more.  I did complete some AAQI quilts while we were driving to and from Baltimore.

I'm calling this one Country Garden.  It has a center 9-patch that is a vintage quilt block, I appliqued on with large primitive black stitches.  The edges are frayed and the flowers and leaves are painted/stamped on an off white cotton fabric.  This little quilt can be hung vertical or horizontal.  I placed three triangle hanging tabs so that the owner could have a choice.  The quilt is machine quilted and measures 8 1/2 x 11 inches.  I'm off to a few odd job around the house and lunch with friends.  Have a great Monday and Happy Quilting!

Sunday---Precious Promises

And if you draw out your soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall your light rise in obscurity, and your darkness be as the noonday.  And the Lord shall guide you continually, and satisfy your soul  in drought, and make fat your bones, and you shall be like a garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.  Isaiah 58: 10-11
