Cavalia is more than a "horse show". It is a combination of equestrian beauty and art.
Welcome to my patchwork journal. I enjoy expressing myself through fiber. Tiny pieces of vintage quilt blocks and fabric combined with hand stitches create my art. When not quilting I'm living a patchwork life. Always changing and helping to keep me young and on my toes. Join me in my experiences and thoughts.

Cavalia or NHL Hockey????
Cavalia, have you seen it??? If it comes to a town near your and you enjoy animals, especially horses, I highly recommend the show. For almost 45 years I have been a frequent attendee at Baseball games, Football games, Basketball games and Hockey games both professional and amateur. I live in a home of males, even the dog is a boy. Going to the arts is few and far between, but I will say my hubby is very good about taking me to things that I know deep down he would rather be doing something else. Well, this week was one of those evenings. For a month we had tickets to Cavalia at my request of course. All was good until a few days before the show and our son reminded his father that they had St. Louis Blues Hockey tickets for that night. Hubby told him to invite a friend, he was going with me to the "horse show". We had a wonderful evening, met our friends and our son and his friend at a local restaurant for dinner---everyone was going to the Hockey game, except for us. What a great hubby, he enjoy the show, but when he had an opportunity he checked his phone and of course our son kept him up to date on a record setting game. The Blues won, which added to the most wins in a season, 9th shut out for a Blues goalie (most in the franchise history) and the Blues are #1 in the NHL going for the President Cup honors. His heart was down the street at the hockey arena, but he enjoyed me enjoying the "horse show".

I truly enjoyed my evening and love my hubby for choosing Horses over Hockey. Have a great Friday and Happy Quilting!

Lucky Number 13
I've just completed #13 AAQI quilt donation. This will be my final addition to the March Mailings. I was trying for 15 of my 30 goal, but just ran out of time. But, I'll keep on quilting and have an extra two quilts in my August/September mailing. Anyway, this little AAQI quilt is just plain FUN. So I've named it Crazy Summer Fun.
The little quilt is 8 1/2" square and has rag appliqued flowers with button centers and crazy black and white stems and leaves. I used pink embroidery thread to quilt the green and tan pinwheel background. This was a fun quilt to make --- just kinda of made me smile. Tonight is the Crossroads Quilters meeting and I'm anxious to see what the ladies have to add to the March Mailings---I'll post pictures on Wednesday. Until then Happy Quilting!

Butterfly Wings
Black and gold fabrics accent this late 1800's butterfly tobacco silk. I just started sewing, choosing black, white and a touch of yellow/gold to accent this little 2 x 3 inch tobacco silk. When it reached a size perfect for AAQI---I considered it finished. I added a touch of fuzzy yarns and some wooden beads for fun. Butterfly Wings is machine quilted and measures 7 1/2 x 7 inches. What are your weekend plans? Hubby and I are headed to an Antique Show and Sale this Saturday, always love looking at vintage. Hope your weekend plans will be full of a little fun and whimsy too. Have a good one and as always Happy Quilting!

Let Me Introduce Bo
Bo has inspired his second AAQI quilt and I thought you all would like to meet him. Bo was a Birthday present from my hubby. He is a Black Lab Mix. Bo was a cute puppy and never small. Today, Bo stands 31" tall and weights 102 lbs. He is a real entertainer and is always making us laugh with his antics. Very devoted to his family especially me. As my hubby says, "He's Jan's dog". When he is really being silly the comments are always, "Come get your Dog." He's a great dog and has been a true joy in this household.
Bo Today
Devoted is 8 1/2" x 9 1/2" with photo transfer center and hand quilting. Wishing you a great Monday and Happy Quilting!

All Skate
Once again the little Polar Bear novelty fabric I love has made it into an AAQI quilt. All Skate is a border from the Polar Bear print. The little quilt is 9 1/2" x 6 1/4" and has been hand quilted around the skaters and has free hand quilted liberated stars in the sky. Try incorporating a border into your next AAQI quilt---fun and easy. Have a great Friday and Happy Quilting!

March Mailing #9
#9 Log Cabin in the Woods, this is the second Log Cabin in the Woods I've made for AAQI. The first was about 4 or 5 years ago. It was raw edged applique and so much fun to make. I was surprised and thrilled when it sold at auction for $125.00. This log cabin is larger 8 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches. I used needle turn applique, embroidery and hand quilted to complete this little quilt. I added button flowers around the cabin, beads and french knots to the liberated trees.
Have a great Wednesday and as always Happy Quilting!

9-Patch Tilt
This little AAQI quilt was made without a ruler or rotary cutter. I used crumbs from other projects and what I call the clip and tear method. I keep a paper bag on the floor by my cutting table and when little pieces of this project or that project is left over I just toss then into the bag for a future crumb quilt. For this little quilt I dug around in the bag to get neutral colors and then just stared sewing them together half square triangles---not really measuring just cutting into somewhat of a little square. For the black borders, I just make an estimated guess on the width that I was looking for---clip the edge and tear. I confess, I used this method frequently. Borders are always straight once the grain of the fabric is established. The little 8 1/2" square quilt was fun to just put together---I had no plan---can you tell? That's how 9-Patch Tilt was born. Old buttons are tied on just for a little fun. Have a great Monday where ever you are and as always Happy Quilting!

More March Mailings
My quilting group Crossroads Quilters are adding to the March mailing box. As a group we put together two mailings a year. One the first of the year---we're a little late this year---and one in August/September. So far I have received five quilts to add to the March mailing and I have a very positive feeling that more will be waiting for me at this month's meeting. The very talented ladies in Crossroad Quilters have donated 26 quilts last year, our first year to take on the AAQI project. Introduce AAQI to your quilting group and have the fun and great satisfaction of making a mini quilt for a very good cause. Happy Quilting!

To Late or To Early???
I'm not sure if this little AAQI quilt is to late or to early for the March mailing, but Spider Webs will be in the box as #7. I love this little novelty print of happy spiders weaving their interlockings webs, so I just quilted their webs and a border around the center for this little medallion quilt. The little quilt is 10 1/4" x 8 1/4". Hope it is sunny where you are and Happy Quilting!!

Grandma Moses goes AAQI
Back in November of 2011, I talked about this vintage fabric I found at a tag sale. The piece is quite large and I really didn't know exactly what I wanted to do with it, but I just couldn't pass it up. The fabric was produced by Riverdale Fabrics and is based on an original painting by Grandma Moses entitled Williamstown. I think there are many quilts in this fabric, but AAQI gets the first.
#6 in my count down to 30 is this little whole cloth.
#6 in my count down to 30 is this little whole cloth.
I just selected a portion of the fabric, embellished it with beads and finished it off with hand quiting. The little whole cloth I'll call Williamstown Church is 8 x 7 inches. Have a wonderful weekend, Happy Quilting!
