Fruit Picking in the Valley

Hubby and I just finished picking Oranges and Grapefruit. The church is having a Rummage Sale on Saturday and we're going to donate the crop to them. Of course, we'll save some to enjoy for ourselves. It is getting colder here---I guess this is our part of the winter storm. I just listened to the weather prediction for St. Louis and I'll have to say I'm glad I'm here, but concerned about our family in St. Louis getting ready to weather the storm. Be Safe and Happy Quilting!

Vacationing in the Valley

Hubby and I are enjoying Day 5 of a 14 day vacation in Arizona. The temps are wonderful, shirt sleeves and shorts. Today there are scattered thunderstorms predicted, but nothing like what is on tap for St. Louis. Always a quilter, no matter where I go quilts are on my mind---as we garage sale and estate sale I'm looking for quilting items. And best of all a Quilt Show this weekend, YEA. Wednesday we're heading to Prescott---will probably see some snow, would it be January/February without snow???

These lovely Grapefruit are on our tree in the back yard of the condo. Hubby has already picked the oranges---plan to bring some of these beauties home to MO. I'll be writing again from the AZ, hopefully with more photos from the quilt show & Prescott. Have a wonderful Monday and as always Happy Quilting!

Ready for Quilting

Saturday was a quiet day at the house, hubby was in Kansas City at the KC Royals Fanfest. It was a road trip with three friends and our son. The report was a wonderful time---a guy thing. Anyway, back at the homestead I was able to quilt all day---loved it. I've been working on a quilt for a Challenge/Contest in March. The idea has been in my head for quite a while, but time has not been on my side, so Saturday I set of goal to finish the quilt top. YEA!! I did it.

The quilt top and I are taking a rest for about two weeks before I start quilting. Quilting is causing me some concern. The top will be machine quilted, but just what I want to do and with what type of threads I'm not sure. Time to think, research and just look at the top will help me decide.

Tip---taking a photo of a quilt top can help you see problems and gives you a perspective that is difficult to see just viewing the top as your stitching. Notice the red piping on the right side corner disappears. I've since taken that little section apart and made the correction. Photos can be helpful when making a quilt top and trying to decide placement too.

This little top is 16" square and I plan to used black backing and binding, that much I have decided. It doesn't even have a name and I usually name my quilts while I'm making them. This little quilt has become a real challenge---and that's a "good thing". Wishing you a wonderful Sunday and Happy Quilting!

Making Progress

Made some changes to the original design and making progress. The silver scarf presented two problems---one the design was to much on this mini quilt, took the eye away from the Polar Bear and two the fabric would unravel as I was stitching, it didn't offer the look I was going for. This is why auditioning fabric is important when making a little quilt. So, in my basket of lace and tatting I found some vintage tatting the made perfect snowflakes. I have continued to use the metallic thread for both the snowflakes and the Polar Bear (he has a little bling). I've also been thinking about a few beads here and there (another audition--we'll see???) Happy Quilting!

Ice Dreams Under Construction

Polar Bear Ice Dreams is starting to come together. My first step is to select three shades of fabric, I like to use a raw edge, so I tore the pieces the size I desired.

Then I machine stitched the first and third piece to the foundation fabric. For this piece I started with the darkest on the top lightest on the bottom. The middle piece I will add later and hand quilt it into place.

I add batting, backing and place the design elements. For this mini quilt I'm going to try adding some sparkle with pieces from an old scarf and using metallic thread for quilting. The flowers in the scarf represent the snow falling as our happy Polar Bear skates.

I'm off to start hand quilting and putting this all together. Will check in later, As always Happy Quilting!

Ice Dreams

This morning our area of Missouri woke to a blanket of snow and it's still snowing. The forecast was for 6 + inches. I think I'm looking at the +. The woods is quiet, as only a snow can make it, except for the bird feeders. Lots of activity at all the feeders this morning.

The Cardinal is very patient as he waits for the Woodpeckers to take a break. All this snow has inspired an AAQI quilt. I'm thinking Polar Bear Ice Dreams.

This Polar Bear is part of a novelty print I've used before to make AAQI quilts. I love this print for its bright colors and happy pattern of a bear family enjoying a snowy outing. Just like today. So soup is going in the slow cooker and I plan on doing some sewing. I'll give up dates as the day continues. As always Happy Quilting!

Subdivision Planning

The newest addition to my Liberated Star subdivision is a grass hut. I didn't get as much quilting completed today as I had planned. I was able to sketch three more housing ideas.

From a grass hut to a castle, real variety---I have three more to complete my set of twelve and then stars for the corners. I just need some undisturbed time!!! That may be a dream. Have a good weekend and Happy Quilting!

Housing Boom

I've been busy the past two days, but I have found time to enjoy making a few houses for my Liberated Star mini quilt.

The igloo must have be influenced by the weather. It is still snowy here and with the cold temps. predicted for tonight----igloo seems right. Then I started thinking Spring. The next two houses, travel trailer and tent---makes me feel warm.

I'm anxious to see what I come with tomorrow. After I make a total of 12 houses, I'm planning liberated stars in the corners similar to the ones in the center. Not sure how I'm going to quilt this---I do plan free motion quilting, there are so many seams that it will make hand quilting difficult. The houses are raw edge appliqued. Happy Quilting!

Snow & Quilts

Snowy morning in Missouri---the birds are busy in the yard, woodpeckers and wrens are getting their morning energy for the cold day ahead. And I'm getting ready to start my day by joining my Liberated Quilters group in a virtual quilting retreat. We work when ever we can on what ever project we want and then email the group about our daily progress. We can then post pictures showing our projects.

I'm taking my Liberated Stars quilt from a few weeks ago, a step further and adding a circle of Liberated Houses. The houses will represent different types of homes from around the world. Everyone looks at the same sky. That's my idea, we'll see what happens.

My first house is a tree house. The block is 3 1/2 inches square, the star center 9 inches square. Great day for quilting. I'll keep you posted on my progress. Happy Quilting!

Amish Miniature

Reflecting on wonderful quilts from the past and their makers inspired me to make a Diamond within a Square Amish miniature.

This little miniature offers the Amish traditional look with 21st century fun. The center diamond is made from a cotton blend that has a touch of sparkle. Maybe I should call it a Liberated Amish Miniature??? The mini measures 9 inches square and will be my first donation to AAQI for 2011. I've just had a thought---why not liberate the Amish pattern with a twist on the piecing. Instead of one color solids---what about stripes, dots, stars. Wow, the ideas are endless. You may see some variations of this pattern in 2011. Happy Quilting!

In the Beginning

Everyone has a quilting story---how did I come to love, and appreciate quilts? Where did the desire to become a quilt maker come from? Where am I going with my quilt making? Reflections and Refresh is my theme this year. This is a milestone year for me, I will be turning 65 and now what do I want to do since I've grow up. After so many years of balancing the raising of a family, a demanding career, planning for the future, social and community obligations, being the right hand gal to my hubby and his demanding career---what do I want to do now? Children raised, retired from my career, hubby retired from his, social and community obligations are now by choice. Freedom to do what I truly enjoy---quilt making is now in the forefront and I'm loving it. A picture is worth a thousand words. These are the two quilts that I can truly say sum up my love of quilting.

Hanging on an antique drying rack in our guest bedroom is a Sun Bonnet Sue made by my Grandmother. It was a Christmas present to me when I was in the 4th grade. I love that quilt and each time I look at it, memories of her and all the wonderful quilts she made from the feed sacks she collected while living on a farm in rural Missouri. Not only did she make quilts for the family, but she made me doll clothes from the same feed sacks. Many are represented in this quilt and I remember them to this day. This quilt was once lost to me and found and returned. I'm so thankful to have it back again. I will have to say this quilt was the beginning. I loved touching the fabric, feeling the warmth---like my Grandmother's hug. How can a piece of cloth offer so much to someone?
In the course of life events came the passing of my Grandmother and a gift. A few months after she had passed, my Mother give me a suitcase. She only said your Grandmother wanted you to have this. I had no idea what my Grandmother would have given me---I thought I knew all her thoughts and possessions, but I had never seen this suit case before. When I opened the case I discovered her quilt patterns, quilt blocks, and this quilt top Improved Nine-Patch ready to be quilted. At that time I didn't know how to hand quilt, so I had it quilted. Since it's completion some 25 years ago, it has been on display in our home and the spring board for all my quilting. As this year begins, so does my Reflections and Refresh theme as I move forward in some quilting adventures. I look forward sharing them with you and I hope you will share yours with me. It's Tuesday so I'm off to the church to do some quilting. Have a great day and Happy Quilting!

Reflections and Refresh

Back and refreshed after the holidays. Not much quilting accomplished while I was unplugged, but many plans for 2011 were made. I did some reflecting about the 2010, too. My main goal for 2010 was to make 52 AAQI quilts during the year. I fell short by 7, but I did reach my overall AAQI goal of $1000 earned from my mini quilts. In fact, my present total is over $1500 and I have 5 new AAQI quilts waiting to be finished. This year my AAQI goal is to slow down and produce a more creative mini quilt, to try my hand at new techniques and to be even more liberated in my quiltmaking. Happy New Year to everyone and as always Happy Quilting!!!
